Rocky Gap is a 7.5-mile technical trail that takes about 2–3 hours to complete, depending on traffic and conditions. The route climbs roughly 1,500 feet in elevation as it winds through tight turns, loose rock, and sandstone ledges. Rated Expert, this trail demands high-clearance vehicles with solid recovery gear and experienced drivers. Weather and recent washouts can significantly impact difficulty, so use caution and scout obstacles when needed.

A Hidden Geocache

Tucked near the trail summit is a long-standing geocache — bring a pen and leave a token!

Just off the summit of Rocky Gap Road, a short hike leads to a well-known geocache tucked along the Bridge Mountain trail access. It’s one of the older caches in the area, placed in the early 2000s, and still actively logged by adventurous hikers and off-roaders.

Looking for a technical challenge with unbeatable desert views? Rocky Gap Road, also known as Potato Ridge, is a well-known off-road trail that cuts through Red Rock Canyon, connecting the scenic loop to Lovell Canyon.

Food & Drinks

Off-roading takes more out of you than you think — especially in the desert. Always pack plenty of water (more than you think you’ll need), along with snacks or a meal to keep your energy up during the ride.

Rocky Gap is not just a scenic drive — it’s a technical trail that demands preparation. At minimum, every rig should carry essential recovery and safety gear, including a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, a jack, and basic tools.
  • For this specific trail, high-clearance, larger tires, and at least one locking differential are strongly recommended.
  • Vehicles with suspension lifts, skid plates, and rock sliders will have a much easier time navigating the ledges and off-camber sections.
